4 Steps to Ponderonit

Step One: Think it

Thinking virtuous thoughts is much more difficult than one would imagine. The practice just isn't there, that's all. We've all been educated to think that all that rumbling and grumbling we do in our minds doesn't matter. Well, it does. Bad habits of thought produce bad habits in speech and actions. Bad habits can be replaced with good habits! Being kind to the self in thoughts attracts kindness to us. Don't just poo poo the idea if you haven't given it a real go.

Step Two: Say it

Insert it into conversation. Affirm it. Repeat it. Put your heart into it. Eventually you'll see that it's better to feel awkward about saying things like, “I'm so stupid” rather than feeling awkward and deceitful by saying things like, “I'm an intelligent human being” or even “I'm a genius.” Help yourself get past the feeling of awkwardness by practice, practice and more practice. Be determined to uplift yourself. Remember, if you don't think about it first though you won't be able to say it. We can only speak what we think. Hmmm. Ponderonit.

Step Three: See it

After awhile you'll begin to observe the word around you. We draw to us what we think on. You may actually see the word in print or hear someone on the television use the word. Someone close to you may use the word in conversation. You may observe others treating you with the quality you are thinking on. Seeing it helps give credence to this process. Through observation you will begin to see that what you place your attention on manifests out into the world and back again.

Step Four: Be it

The embodiment of the principle is everything. Pondering and thinking on what is compassion makes us want to speak compassionately and we begin to see compassion manifesting around us where before we saw none. Eventually, we become living embodiments of compassion. If you want to change the world change your thoughts, speech and actions. Thinking on virtues makes us speak more deliberately and intelligently. This way of being in turn makes our actions impact the world more profoundly. We can only become the things that we repeat in life. The repetition of good thoughts, good words and good actions means that ultimately we are protected by that goodness.
